The Innocent

Dupnitsa - Blagoevgrad - Simitli

There was something about Lyubo. While his friends were laughing and joking around, it seemed like he had something on his mind. Something tugging at his heart, yearning to reach the surface. And whether it was because of a momentary emotion, or the odd relief of sharing something with a stranger you may never see again, he started speaking.

"You might not believe me, but this story is true and very important to me. I stayed nine months in jail innocent. Why? I was convicted of abusing the woman I loved. Someone convinced her to lie in court. She ruined my life. I was ashamed of telling this story for a long time, but now I am not afraid. There are no laws in this country."

The departure of the bus cut our conversation short. Still, even though I did not know this person or the details of his story, something about the sad glisten of his eyes made me believe he was telling the truth.
