The Travelling Musicians

Dupnitsa - Blagoevgrad - Simitli

From left to right: Blajko, Vasko, and Lyubo.

As soon as I set foot on the bus station, I heard loud, cheerful laughter. It's two gypsy men sitting behind a set of drums, talking to each other. One of them was tough-looking, with a brown leather jacket and dark chocolate eyes, and the other seemed like an easy-going, friendly guy. When they saw my camera, their eyes lightened up with curiosity.

"Hey, you! Come take a picture of us as a memory."

They told me they had just come back from Dupnitsa.

"We are travelling musicians. We have been all around Bulgaria, as well as abroad. They invite us to play at clubs and restaurants. It's always fun when we are around!"

Vasko put his arm around his friend, patting him on the shoulder with a grin on his face.

"Remember us like this - we are Vasko and Blajko, the big and the small hammer."

After I took a few photos, another guy approached with a banitsa in his hand, looking at us a bit confused. Vasko gestured him to come over.

"Come over here! This is Lyubo, he plays the saxophone."

Lyubo seemed a bit more shy and reserved in comparison to his loud friends, but they made him smile and relax. It turned out that Vasko was from Simitli, while Blajko and Lyubo were from Osenovo. This made me wonder how they met.

"Music brought us together. We are gypsies, we have no home. This is what connects us."
